DCSTM AND PARTNERS’ DEBUSHING LETSEMA ADDRESSES SAFETY CONCERNS
A structured partnership between the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and different stakeholders benefits students and community traveling through the railway line between unit 3 and shopping complexes in Mmabatho.
The Department leading this Crime Prevention Through Environmeal Design (CPTED), confirms through Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) that a number of rape, hijack and mugged cases had been rapid in this crime hotspot area.
It is also said that the perpetrators are targeting university, college and high school students, causing them to live in fear and not been able to walk free as the area they have to pass through is now regarded as a crime nest for robbers and rapists.
This Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) programme, is being done through the de-bushing, clearing of grass and shrubs, as well as walk-ways at identified crime hotspots in many communities.
The initiative was recently part of the commitments made by MEC Wessels Morweng during his budget speech that the Department will continue strengthening the fight against crime and ensures that communities live in a crime free environment.
