North West Legislature Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management to Conduct Oversight on Scholar Transport in Dr Ruth Mompati District
The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management in the North West Provincial Legislature, chaired by Hon. Freddy Sonakile, will participate in the Legislature Oversight Week in the Dr Ruth Mompati District from 03 -06 February 2026.
In terms of its Annual Performance Plan, the Committee was scheduled to conduct oversight visits to police stations and traffic stations to assess compliance and service delivery. However, following the South African Human Rights Commission report on scholar transport, as well as recent incidents across the country involving learner transportation, the Committee has revised its programme to focus exclusively on scholar transport compliance.
Over the four-day period, the Committee will conduct vigorous, unannounced oversight visits to various schools where scholar transport services are utilised.
The oversight visits will be undertaken together with departmental officials responsible for scholar transport, as well as traffic law enforcement officers.
This oversight initiative underscores the importance of responsive and proactive oversight that addresses the real and immediate challenges faced by communities. The Committee calls on all stakeholders to fully cooperate in its efforts to ensure that learner transport services are safe, roadworthy, and compliant with applicable legislation.
Parents and guardians are urged to report any scholar transport service providers who place the lives of learners at risk through non-compliance or unsafe practices.
