SCHOOL SAFETY PART OF THUNTSHA LEROLE ACTIVITIES IN KANANA, ORKNEY

School safety faces serious challenges, including high incidents of violence, bullying, gangsterism and substance abuse, which normally disrupts teaching and learning in local schools. This is what the two school principals in Kanana outside Orkney in the Dr KK Municipality told Department’s officials.

However, the two schools that were visited during the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme indicated that the Police Station school safety Ofiicer, a programme previously known as “Adopt a Cop” continues to produce results.

So far at Pelokgale Primary School, it is only two learners of 12 and 13 years, doing grade 6 and 7 respectively who were caught with dagga, which turned out to be as a result of peer pressure from other children in the township.

At Matlhaleng Secondary school, bullying was reported to be a challenge too albeit at a small scale. However, there is a worrying factor of external influence by teenagers who are always seen around the perimeters of the school fence.

The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management continues to arrange critical stakeholders to address learners on the above challenges and constant monitoring to ensure that schools have school safety officers who ensure that all learners study in a safe and conducive environment.
