MEC Morweng commends police for swift response to ATM busters.
Mahikeng– The MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng has welcomed the arrest of five individuals, including a police officer linked to an ATM bombing incident.
The crime is reported to have taken place at Dinokana village near Zeerust and suspects were apprehended in Magogoe village on Wednesday in Mahikeng, where three other individuals were shot dead by police on the scene.
MEC Morweng says this milestone is an indication of unwavering commitment to root out criminal elements in its entirety including within the police service.
“We are pleased with the expeditious arrest of the suspects, it is unfortunate that amongst them is a police member. However, we accept that this is an indication that no one is above the law, that even those who collude with criminals when they are supposed to uphold the law will be dealt with accordingly,” said MEC Morweng.
Furthermore, MEC says this sends a clear message on the course of action against criminals.
“Safety is a huge element in any economy, these criminal acts sabotage our gains as government to ensure that the province is safe and secure. Particularly to drive investment and secure jobs. We therefore send a message to those who think they can do as they please, that we will be decisive in dealing with crime,” said MEC Morweng.
The suspects are expected to appear before court soon, on charges relating to ATM bombing, possession of explosives and other offences.
The police are not ruling out the possibility of more arrests in relation to the crime.
