“THERE MUST BE COMPLIANCE WITH THE LAW”, SAYS MEC MORWENG ON ROADS BLOCKADES BY TAXI OPERATORS IN MAHIKENG
The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng has directed that law enforcement must ensure that there is compliance with the law.
This follows the blockading of all entrances into the Mahikeng CBD early this morning by taxi operators. On Friday, the 15th of May 2026, the Department had agreed to a request for a meeting with the operators which was scheduled for this morning, Monday 18th of May 2026.
The MEC nonetheless as per another request from the operators, after blockading the roads, went to receive the memorandum at the Mahikeng CBD. Amongst others, the operators are complaining about the mushrooming of illegal ranks where illegal taxi operators are transporting passengers. This, they say is a problem throughout the Province.
MEC Morweng was unequivocal and directed that law enforcement must ensure that there is compliance with the law. There is also an appeal for all passengers to desist from hitchhiking lifts from illegal taxi operators as they are not legally protected in case of accidents.
