ROAD ACCIDENT CLAIMS NINE LIVES OUTSIDE POTCHEFSTROOM
Nine people have died in an accident involving a truck and a taxi. The accident occurred at approximately 23H:54 on Thursday, the 28th of May 2026. The accident happened on a tripoint between
North West, Free State and Gauteng at the intersection of the Potchefstroom/Vereeniging Road and the Fochville/Parys Road.
The taxi carrying sixteen passengers was travelling from the direction of Fochville towards Parys when it collided with a truck which was coming towards the crossing point.
Eight people died at the scene of the accident and the ninth passenger died at the hospital bringing the number of fatalities to nine. The deceased include a ten year old girl child, a woman and seven men.
The truck driver sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital for medical treatment. Eight other passengers from the taxi were taken to the Parys, Carletonville and Fochville hospitals with injuries. One of the injured passengers is a 15 year old girl.
The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng sends the deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured speedy recovery. A culpable homicide case is being investigated.
