MEC WESSELS MORWENG VISITS BEREAVED FAMILIES IN POTCHEFSTROOM AND ORKNEY
The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng is visiting the bereaved families of people who were shot dead in Potchefstroom and Orkney in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality today.
Four people including a 15-year-old girl were shot dead on Saturday evening, the 30th of May 2026, at a local tavern in Kanana, Orkney. The random shooting took place in the street near the tavern and some of the victims were passersby. Preliminary investigations revealed that three unidentified male suspects, armed with high calibre rifles and wearing face coverings, were responsible for the attack.
Three of deceased have been identified as Lesotho nationals aged between 30 and 36 years and two of the injured, aged 30 and 45 years old have also been identified as Lesotho nationals.
MEC Morweng will before then visit the family of community activist Mr Mokoena Letsie in Ikageng, Potchefstroom. According to the reports, Mr Mokoena was shot multiple times in what is suspected to be a hit. He was linked to the South African Council of Churches and also the founder of a movement called Potch4Palestine.
The visit begins in Ikageng, Potchefstroom at the Letsie family at 12:00 and thereafter the MEC Morweng will visit bereaved families in Kanana, Orkney at 15:00.
