Taung : At least a total of three hundred and fifty learners from four identified schools at Greater Taung Local Municipality have benefited from the distribution of bicycles by government today.
MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari joined the Deputy Minister of Transport, Lisa Mangcu and Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenneth Morolong and other leaders from district and local municipalities in the distribution of this important mode of transport.
This is part of government’s Non Motorised Transport (NMT) programme.
Stakeholders including principals, learners and parents were elated and thanked government for this gesture, emphasising the awarding of bicycles will go a long way in addressing myriad of challenges related to access to affordable, efficient and reliable transport, especially for learners coming from destitute background in the far flung villages.
Head of the Department, Dr Hans Kekana says programmes to throughly educate all beneficiaries of these bicycles on road safety, is already afoot.
