MEC MORWENG CONTINUES TO ASSES POLICE STATIONS IN NW
The MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng has taken the advantage of Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme to fast track his oversight visitation to police stations where he continuously assesses
police stations’ status quo.
Morweng’s oversight visit is informed by the Civilian Secretariat for Police monitoring tool, that is meant to ensure that stations are servicing communities according to the Batho Pele Principles.
During this week’s Thuntsha Lerole programme in the Tswaing Local Municipality, the Department led by the Chief Directorate Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, visited three police stations within the area, Sannieshof, Mareetsane and Mooifontein, where similar challenges were recorded for the attention of the MEC.
The three stations have no detaining cells for awaiting trialists, insufficient resources such vehicles and personnel.
However, more challenges were recorded at the Sannieshof police station where there is no storage and parameter fencing for the station.
MEC Morweng said it is important to understand the challenges that the police are faced with, which are impediments of quality service delivery to the communities.
He said, this will enable him to mobilise such resources during his continuous engagements with the National Minister for Police.
“We will continue to plead with the Minister for police to at least allocate us more numbers of personnel during the completion or passout of new police recruites because most if not all of our stations especially in the rural areas of the Province don’t have enough personnel, vehicles and other resources that they need to service our people,” said Morweng.
The three stations are commonly faced with a high number of reported cases of stocktheft. A worrying factor in the Province, however, the Department continues to engage with farmers and communities at large through stocktheft engagement sessions to deal with this criminal element.
The Department is also working towards hosting the Provincial Stocktheft Summit some time during the course of the 2024/25 financial year.
“Stock theft is a serious challenge, and crime in general needs to be tackled through an integrated approach. As government alone we cannot win this fight but together with our communities we can,” he said.
The Provincial Traffic Authorities began the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme Reloaded in the Tswaing Local Municipality with a law enforcement operation where a number of traffic fines were issued with a value of R26 000.
