Illegal mining in situation in Stilfontein North West

Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Wessels Morweng accompanied North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi to welcome the Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Minister Cassel Mathale at the Stilfontein Police Station, on their visit to the Stilfontein mine shaft where illegal miners are still underground.

To date, more than 1,000 individuals have resurfaced from illegal mining activities, and efforts are ongoing to ensure that those who remain underground resurface

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, Deputy Minister for Defence Richard Mkhungu, Premier Lazarus Mokgosi, MEC Wessels Morweng, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Executive Mayor Cllr Nikiwe Num and Executive Mayor for Matlosana Local Municipality Cllr Fikile Mahlophe engaging Khuma community at the Stilfontein Police Station.

This after Government delegation visited the disused nearby shaft which allegedly is used by illegal miners.

So far 1 187 illegal miners have been arrested and are from Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and few South Africans.
