Dr Kenneth Kaunda Scholar Patrol Ambassadors inducted.

A total number of 16 individuals in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality have received an opportunity to become part of the Road Safety Scholar Patrol Ambassadors Programme. This is out of 140 appointed ambassadors in the province as part of a joint recruitment by the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure though the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The ambassadors, who have been contracted for a period of a year were officially inducted in Wolmaransstad on Thursday, 19 June 2025.

Pedestrian injuries have become the second leading cause of death for children aged between 5 and 14. Given the vulnerability of those children, Scholar Patrol Ambassadors
are entrusted with the responsibility to assist them to safely cross the road.

Road Safety Project Coordinator, Ms Valencia Jonathan says the induction will prepare ambassadors to be able to navigate their working environment as well as to carry out daily duties as expected.

“The job of an ambassador requires one to understand all fundamental road safety protocols. They are dealing mainly with young children who have not yet become fully aware of safe road use.

“Therefore we equip them with the skills to conduct their daily duties, with safety techniques and rules as well as how to handle unforeseen circumstances because road user behaviour can become unpredictable at times. This is all to ensure that learner safety on the road is increased and to significantly reduce road accidents among young pedestrians”, explained Jonathan.

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Manager for Road Safety Management, Ms Selloane Tsoeute, highlighted says the programme will be closely monitored to guarantee success in the implementation.

“As a district we want to ensure that we tighten the monitoring of all points, and that stringent controls are in place to achieve that.

“We will also be continuing our engagements with other state organs to ensure that we have the relevant signage and road markings on our points” she highlighted.

Part of the training also included presentations from the Human Resource Management Directorate, Road Traffic Management and National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
