ALL WOMEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS STAMPED AUTHORITY TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE
RUSTENBURG – Recognising the role women in the law enforcement play, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport activated the Law Enforcement Operations, as part of commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the historic women’s march to the Union Building in 1956.
During this month, women will lead special operations focusing amongst others, drunken driving, compliance on vehicle and drivers, road safety education and outreach programmes.
Activating the month long programme, women from different law enforcement agencies stamped authority in the Bojanala District to ensure total compliance on the road.
Having multiple joint operations in the Rustenburg area, a total of 813 vehicles were stopped and checked with 61 traffic fines issued for variety of offences, 6 discontinued vehicles and 15 undocumented foreign nationals detained. The operation continues throughout the long weekend.
Advocating for safer road usage, with more focus on pedestrian safety, women officers engaged with both motorists and community members in Boitekong outside Rustenburg where they handed over reflective jackets for visibility when crossing the road.
Recent statistics reveal an alarming rate of pedestrian accidents and Boitekong is among the highest in the Province. Addressing community members who gathered at the operational activation, the Chief Director for District Coordination and Government Fleet, Dr George Marindi said the Department encourages women to brave the previously male dominated professions as they are equally capable of excelling in such fields.
“We celebrate women who took leadership in law enforcement, the women who are always on the street leading operations to save lives. We are proud as the Department because it is our mandate to ensure that people are and feel safe and these women are leading from the front.
It is a fact that women are not happy when people perish on the street, they are not happy when they hear about Gender Based Violence and Fermicide (GBV&F) cases and the social illnesses that besiege communities that’s why they are here as law enforcers to ensure that they keep our streets and communities safe and we are rallying behind them as the department,” said Dr Marindi, as he reaffirms commitment to support women in uniform and creating opportunities for them to lead during this year’s women’s month and beyond.
A number of operations are scheduled across the province this month to showcase the commitment of women to enforcing the law and reducing the road incidents and fatalities.
The activation typified public private partnerships as not only various governmental sectors participated but private sector also dispensed services to the communities of Boitekong and the surrounding communities.
