DCSTM combats crime in Letlhabile through CPTED

While sport stadiums are usually known for excitement, fitness and community spirit, the area around Letlhabile Stadium tells a different story. The overgrown bushes and neglected surroundings have created an environment conducive to crime, making it a challenge for residents to feel safe and secure in their own community.

To address this concern, the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has joint forces with stakeholders and community members to debush the area near Letlhabile Stadium in Madibeng Local Municipality in order to enhance visibility and creating a safer environment where residents can freely use the stadium and move around without fear. This is a departmental initiative done through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) known as Letsema.

In welcoming the participants, Assistant Director for Bojanala Crime Prevention Partnerships Ohentse Kalemane highlighted the importance of coming together as stakeholders to help combat Crime, “Police has helped us identify the hotspot for crime and Letlhabile has been identified as crime generator, therefore it is important for the government to come together with stakeholders and help combat crime in our communities,” Mr Kalemane said.

South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Police Forum (CPF), Madibeng Local Municipality, Bojanala Platinum District Municipality and Department of Public Works and Roads were stakeholders in attendence.

The initiative is a key fulfillment of MEC Wessels Morweng’s commitment to fighting crime in the Province.
