Malatse Motsepe Secondary takes Bojanala District winner title at the Road Safety Debate Competition.

First time participants in the Road Safety School’s Debate Competition, Malatse Motsepe Secondary School reigned supreme at the Bojanala District leg of the contest in Rustenburg on Tuesday, landing themselves in the first position.

Based in Mmakau, a village just outside Brits in the Madibeng Local Municipality, the school has secured their seat at the provincial competition set to take place next month.

Noria Baloyi, is the English and Life Orientation teacher at the school, she says her plan to encourage learning from outside the classroom was a winning formula to boost the confidence of her learners.

“I believe in learning outside of the classroom as a way to get learners excited about their academics. I always encourage them to have fun, explore and socialise with other people. As you would have it we are now going home as district winners.

“Along with the incredible experience, what we take away from the competition is our new found understanding on issues concerning road safety, we have become more active in awareness activities and as part of preparation for the provincial competition we will go back to our community and conduct surveys that will form part of our research and inform our points of argument,” said Baloyi.

The second position went to Waterkloof Hills Secondary School from the Rustenburg Local Municipality and with Kgamanyane Secondary School, of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality taking the third position. Other participants included Kgosibodiba Commercial Secondary School and St Athanasius Orthodix Christian Group of School representing Kgetlengrivier and Moretele Local Municipalities respectively.

The participation by all local municipalities in the district was welcomed by the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality’s MMC for Technical Services, Cllr Victoria Makhaula.

“We are pleased to have such great participation by schools representing each of our local municipalities. This is an indication of how seriously we take road safety and a display of our collective efforts to reduce road fatalities as a hotspot district,” said Cllr Makhaula.

The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management’s Bojanala Acting District Director, Lesego Motsatsi says
all schools displayed exceptional talents in the debate.

“We are proud to continuously showcase the brilliance of our learners when it comes to such serious matters that affect all of us.

“Through this initiative, the department aims to raise awareness, encourage critical thinking and presentation amongst school going children and to cultivate responsible road safety behaviour,” added Motsatsi.
