MEC MORWENG EXPRESSES GRATITUDE FOR PROGRESS MADE IN STILFONTEIN

North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng has expressed gratitude to the national government and stakeholders who continue to positively contribute to the Stilfontein operation of resurfacing illegal miners.

MEC Morweng was speaking during the visit of Ministries of Police and Mineral Resources and Energy at the Stilfontein Police Station.

“We are truly grateful for the support we continue to receive from the national government in making sure that we successfully resurface illegal miners here in Stilfontein.
It has never been an easy job, however, the consistent support from national government made it possible for the progress we’ve made to this date,” said Morweng.

He further thanked general stakeholders, including the communities in partnering with government in the operation.

“Our people and stakeholders have also played an important part in this operation and we send our gratitude for their role.”

Mid November last year, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu appointed MEC Morweng to chair a task team responsible for developing a comprehensive plan to resurface the illegal miners.

The team has since developed a three phase plan, which started with the clearing of the site, technical and risk assessment followed by the third phased which is currently on implementation.

The team was made up of SAPS, District and Local Mayors, community leaders, mine owners, mine rescue technical team and other government departments.

To date, more than 1500 individuals involved in illegal mining have resurfaced and have been apprehended. On the operational site, SAPS remains resolute in its commitment to uphold law and order and urges all remaining illegal miners to adhere to police calls to resurface.
