MEC MORWENG HAPPY WITH OPERATION PROSPER FOLLOWING ARREST OF 26 SUSPECT AROUND HARTEBEESPOORTDAM AND SCHEERPOORT NEAR BRITS

MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, have praised the impact by Operation Prosper which was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to deal with illicit mining, gang violence and extortions in Five provinces

Twenty six suspects were today arrested around Scheerpoort and Hartbeespoortdam for illlegal mining of gold. Members of the Operation Prosper Team pounsed on the suspects early this morning while they were busy with their illegal activities.

According to police, the suspects started shooting at the team of police and soldiers when trying to evade arrest, but no team members got injured. Mining equipment and generators were confiscated at the scene.

MEC MORWENG say the Operation is yielding positve results. “Let me say thank you President Cyril Ramaphosa for the Operation Prosper as were are seeing changes and dividends that will make our country and our community safe. We can’t be held at ransom by thugs and people who continues to instill fear in our communities by committing illegal acts and we say is business as usual,no ways, ” concluded Morweng.

The 26 arrerested suspects are expected to appear before Brits Magistrate Court on Thursday.
The Nationality of the suspects are still to be established.
