MEC MORWENG VISITS THE FAMILY OF A 26 YEAR OLD WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY A FOREIGN NATIONAL

MAHIKENG – The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng has on Thursday, 2nd July 2026 visited the bereaved Santo family in Magogoe Tshepang village outside Mahikeng. This follows an incident on the afternoon of Wednesday, 1st July 2026, where their 26 year old son was allegedly stabbed by a foreign national at his tuck shop. He was rushed to a local medical facility but unfortunately later succumbed to injuries sustained.

According to initial police reports, the suspect who reportedly is an Ethiopian national, allegedly stabbed the 26 year old with a sharp object during an altercation.

MEC Morweng visited the distraught Santo family who warmly received him accompanied by Ngaka Modiri Molema District Commissioner, Major General Mmatlhapi Mmolawa and Chief Director for Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, Mrs Mpho Rantona.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and the local community. We are saddened by the loss of your son and our prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

“There is no justification for the taking of a human life. We condemn this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible term. This kind of violence has no place in our communities, it is in fact a threat to the foundation of our democracy and our efforts to enhance social cohesion”, said MEC Morweng.

The MEC also commended the efforts of the police for the swift arrest of the suspect.

“We also applaud police for their swift intervention following assistance by community members. It is this kind of timely action that restores public confidence on our law enforcement system,” said MEC Morweng.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mmabatho Magistrate Court tomorrow, Friday 3rd of July 2026 on murder charges.
