MEC WESSELS MORWENG APPLAUDS WORK OF POLICE IN ARRESTING EIGHT SUSPECTS IN MAGOGONG VILLAGE
MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng welcomed the arrest of suspects, following the brutal murder of a woman in Magogong after accusing her of witchcraft. This came after the disappearance of a child in the village.
The child’s partially burned body was found inside a pit latrine, a few days after she was reported missing. The community went on a rampage and torched the old women’s house before killing her and attacked her son, who is now in hospital.
Following the incidents, MEC Morweng on Wednesday went to visit the families of both the deceased to comfort them on their loss but also to gather more information as to what transpired. After meeting with both families, MEC Morweng promised to leave no stone unturned in finding the killers of both child and the woman.
“As promised when I was there on Wednesday that we will not sleep until those who are responsible are brought to book. I have to congratulate the police for their swift response in ensuring that those who are responsible are brought to book. We will not rest until we are able to unravel these mysterious incidents happening in that village, we are not a banana republic, there is law and order that must be upheld, our community must have trust in us to protect them and we will do just that,” said MEC Morweng.
Eight suspects were arrested in the early hours of today in Magogong for different offences that include attempted murder, kidnapping, arson, murder and malicious damage to property.
The suspects, seven males and a female, aged between 29 and 45, are expected to appear in the Taung Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 October 2024.
Investigations into the matter are underway and the possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out.
