Crime Prevention partnerships’ in Top Village Mahikeng

Top Village – Department of Community Safety and Transport Management Crime Prevention Unit identified Top Village in Mahikeng as one of the hotspot areas with High Rate of Rape, Murder and Domestic Violence. The Department saw it fit to host Spritual Crime Prevention on Gender Based Violence against Vulnerable Groups Awareness Campaign on the 29th of August 2024.

External Stakeholders namely South African Police Services (SAPS), Mahikeng Community Police Forum (CPF), Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, National Prosecuting Authority, Thuthuzela Care Centre, Department of Social Development and Surivor, Department of Health, Department of Home Affairs, Men for Real, Department of Education, Medical Male Circumision,The Aurum institute were in attendance.

Mr Jabulani Dlamini from Mahikeng Community Police Forum encouraged young people to join the forum. “We are the eyes and ears of the police. We are here to ensure that our communities are safe and urge young people to join us. When we come together we can create a safe community.” He said.

Captain Dikolomela from South African Police Services highlighted in her address that the common cause of high rape and crime is the abuse of alcohol amongst young people.

Godfrey Mokhele from Department of Health encouraged independence amongst young people. “One of the other contributor to high crime and rape amongst rural areas like Top Village is lack of independence amongst young people. It is important for the youth to seek education and become independent to avoid being controlled” He said.

Chaplain Reetseng emphasized the need for the church to Stand up and fight for the nation. She further led the area in a powerful prayer.

Kgosi Tau in his closing remarks thanked the Department and all the stakeholders for leading them in prayer and bringing awareness to Top Village and also request that these awareness be done regularly until change is visible.

The purpose of the campaign is for various external stakeholders to come together to convey the message to the youth about Gender Based Violence and offer different services to the area of Top Village. It is also for Pastors to pray for the area, in this way, the Crime Prevention Unit is mitigating the current burning issues.
