As part of implementing the GBVF Prevention Campaign and observing the Social Development Month, the GCIS will be hosting a Community Radio Phone-in Engagement Programme dedicatedto the Protection of Older Persons Against Violence and Abuse. The programme will be held on Thursday, the 17 th October 2024, from 18:00 to 19:00 on your local community radio station.
South Africa, as with other countries in the world, has an ageing population, which means that the proportion of older persons in the country is increasing. It calls for a concertedeffort towards protecting and strengthening the capacity of older persons in our society. Older people in our nation play an important role to advise, direct and lead families and communities. Their experience and knowledge is critical in building communitiesand strengthening our nation. Moreover, we must work to ensure that older persons are protected. The Older Persons Act explicitly criminalises all forms of abuse of older persons. All South Africans have a responsibility to respect, protect and work togetherto promote the rights of older persons and prevent exploitation or abuse of elderly citizens.
