Public Consultations: National Rail Master Plan (NRMP)
The National Department of Transport started developing the National Rail Master Plan in 2024.
The NRMP draft was approved by Cabinet on 1 April 2026 for public consultation and launched. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy officially opened public inputs on 23 April 2026
The purpose of the draft sets out a sustainable strategy for SA’s rail network and will guide all future rail development.
NDoT launched a digital platform with interactive tools as the main hub for public and stakeholder input.
The platform has a Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, interactive tools, and a user manual to help the public review the draft and submit comments
Participating stakeholders were
Bojanala local municipalities, SANTACO, SALGA, Office of the Premier, Bojanala House of Traditional Leaders, Transnet, and South African Women in Transport have already joined the process.
